Can I do advertisements on a Joomla web site?

I am designing a web site now with Joomla and will be with time putting advertisements for other companies on my web site that will of course link to the web sites of those companies. I see this on many web sites I visit but am not sure what systems they are using but can I do this within Joomla and if so how do I go about doing that?

You can do it with the built-in banners component and module, but it's not very advanced.
