Default Evaluating Server Performance

I'm wondering is there a way to test a server to find out how fast it is...how full it is, etc.

The reason I ask is that I inherited a site for my son's youth soccer club and I don't know if I want to leave the site on its current server or move it to one of mine. The hosting account is paid until the end of the year, at which time I will move it anyway, but if the current server is a dog sled, I may as well move the site now.

I've had hosting on other severs in the past that sucked beyond description...the sites were either down half the time or were slow to the point of uselessness. I want to avoid this, but wondered if there is a way to find out performance information sooner rather than later.

Anyone have any info?

If you have sxxxx access you can run the "top" command. That will give you load/ram/cpu usage info. You should also have a link to show you similar output if you have cPanel access.

Not sure if you need root access to install it or not, but this looks decent too: http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpsysinfo/

Hehe...what a joke!

While looking over the account to find out if I had SSH access (not) I discovered I also have no MySql or PHP!

Case closed!

Well, if they don't allow any scripting or database access, I would guess ther server would be pretty fast

Yeah...like a high-powered vacuum...it sucks quickly!

The server probably has other suckers though that pay extra to get DBs and scripting so there might be at least a small load.
